After the staggering success of Pokémon GO, Niantic says they are excited to take the next step for AR mobile entertainment.

The new Harry Potter AR game, Wizards Unite, will launch in 2018. Ingress is more centered on location defense and exploration than capturing Pokemon, so this would make sense for an epic fantasy franchise that pits good against evil. A similar rumor a year ago was thought to be a false alarm at the time, though Niantic did acknowledge that the company had the rights to create such a game.

Niantic is regarded as the leader in the augmented reality gaming space. "The games will vary from mobile to console games", said Pottermore, "and will feature both new characters and - excitingly - could feature familiar characters "at different points in their lives" from the Harry Potter stories". Many had initially predicted that Pokémon Go would spawn a series of copycat AR games, and now that prediction finally seems to be coming true. They use Augmented Reality to overlay graphics on real-world locations, encouraging players to walk their neighborhood to reveal new secrets.

Pokemon GO took the world by storm previous year by combining a beloved franchise with a simple and addictive mobile game mechanic.

Hanke spoke in more detail on the official blog for Niantic Games.

If you owned a smartphone in the summer of 2016, chances are you were sucked into Pokémon Go for some amount of time. You can also stare at the logo for the game, because there isn't much else to go on.

Are you bored of playing Pokemon Go and wish you could just throw on some Hogwarts robes and scavenge your local streets for horcruxes, spells and fantastic beasts instead?
