Victory over Benfica on Tuesday, could secure Manchester United's place in the knockout phase of the Champions League and manager Jose Mourinho, believes his team are growing stronger in Europe.

However, Lukaku has failed to score in his last three outings and even elicited groans from the home fans during Saturday's 1-0 win over Tottenham, despite providing the assist for Anthony Martial's victor.

One of the reasons why Tottenham have done so well this season despite a plethora of injuries, especially in midfield is Mauricio Pochettino ensuring every player knows the system he wants to employ in every situation.

"Tottenham lacked the belief to really go for it because I think it gets into their heads".

Here are five things we learned from Manchester United's win over Benfica... The centre-forward created his second assist in two league games, for Anthony Martial's 81st-minute victor, and Mourinho also pointed to how the player was hard for Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen to deal with.

"I'm just happy that they're winning games". And Martial is part of that game plan: The Frenchman has come off the bench four times to score this season.

"If they sit back and knock the balls up to him, he has got to do a lot of work to keep hold of the ball for the rest of them to get there and join in so that he can lay the ball for them".

"Our main aim is to finish first in the group". Manchester were playing extremely conservative, flat football created to not lose, and Benfica were too timid to push the issue. A result of some sort here at the hallowed grounds of Old Trafford could be the spark they need to start a run of great form, though even a win might be too little, too late for their Champions League hopes given that they've won zero points through their first three group stage matches.
