Tropical Depression 18 forms in the gulf

The National Hurricane Center said late Saturday that Selma had largely dissipated over land, but authorities in El Salvador reported mudslides, toppled trees and rivers that threatened to top their banks. A tropical storm watch is in effect for Craig Key to Golden Beach, Florida as well as the Central Bahamas. It was centered about 80 miles (130 kilometers) south of Havana and moving toward the north-northeast at 25 mph (41 kph).

A tropical depression has formed in the Caribbean and could bring a lot of rain to South Florida over the weekend, and tropical storm watches were issued for part of the state.

South Florida can expected scattered thunderstorms and up to four inches of rain, which could cause minor flooding, as well as elevated risk of tornadoes, the National Weather Service said.

"Maximum sustained winds are near 35 miles per hour [55 km/h] with higher gusts". The designation was based on the discovery of a now well-defined center of circulation thanks to Hurricane Hunter reconnaissance aircraft missions inside the storm.


The system is forecast to become a tropical storm later today.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for...

The NHC forecasted rainfall for the Cayman Islands, western and central Cuba and Northwestern Bahamas (4-8 inches with maximum 10 inches possible); and South Florida and Florida Keys (2-4 inches with maximum 6 inches possible). But the hurricane center said even a slight shift to the west could bring tropical-storm force winds to the Keys or the mainland.
