-The 39-year old has never won the trophy in his career.

Italian and Juventus legend Gianlugi Buffon has again announced his intention to retire from football after the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation.

"The only way I could [reverse the decision] would be winning the Champions League, then I could say "okay, we'll I'll try to win the Club World Cup".

The Real Madrid forward was crowned player of the year on Monday at the FIFA Best ceremony at the London Palladium theater attended by runner-up Messi and third-placed Neymar.

With 10 Serie A championships and the 2006 FIFA World Cup under his belt, it is no surprise why many rank him as the best modern goalkeeper and among the greatest of all time.

"This is my last season and I am quite convinced of the choices I take", he told Sky Italia. I will face my next test with enthusiasm. Maybe Szczesny could play one game, and me the other, I don't know. "But I think with a goalkeeper like him behind it is normal that next year I'll stand aside", he added.

His coach Massimiliano Allegri was beaten to The Best FIFA Coach award by Zinedine Zidane, but he hopes to be back in the running next year, since that will mean he has achieved something even greater than last season.

Despite all the domestic silverware he's lifted, the Champions League is the one everyone associated with the club craves, Buffon has suffered three lost final: 2003, 2015 and most recently this year to a ruthless Real Madrid in Cardiff. "To succeed, we need even more motivation than past year, and we're going to need those also to have a great Champions League campaign".

Would like to finish his career with a big win.
