Watford's Brazilian winger hit the deck and referee Neil Swarbrick pointed to the spot, with substitute Troy Deeney doing the honours. Meanwhile Watford are on inspired form under boss Marco Silva, with 3 wins and 3 draws from their opening 7 games.

A point would have seen Arsenal leapfrog Chelsea into fourth but Watford did so instead. Mind you, the Germany defender was making his first Premier League start in 532 days.

"He is not. He is fair, He wins fouls like the best players in the world win fouls".

The set-piece effort came after Arsenal had struggled to break down a Watford side that mirrored its opponents in starting with a three-man back line, too often settling for long-range attempts or throwing in hopeful crosses.

Martin Keown has slammed Mesut Ozil for not being ruthless enough and costing Arsenal all three points in their defeat at Watford.

Moments later came the penalty drama, and then in injury time when Andre Carrillo's shot was blocked Cleverley lashed in a dramatic victor.

"The manager said to play with a bit more belief in the second half", Cleverley told reporters.

'I'm not so happy with our overall level in the second half.

Arsene Wenger's side - who started without either Mesut Ozil or Alexis Sanchez - had won their last four games in all competitions following a slow start but they were poor for much of the contest.

After an unbeaten September, Arsenal have gotten their Premier League campaign back on track after disappointing losses to Stoke and Liverpool.
