No boys for Girl Scouts in area

"This is not the first time Boy Scouts has pursued the girl market in an attempt to bolster its membership".

The response to the Boy Scouts of America announcement this week that the 107-year-old organization will expand its tent to include girls came as swiftly as a troop selling out of mint Girl Scout cookies.

"We are proven over a 100 years proven program that's girl lead, girl driven, for girls, by girls, and our mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character whom make the world the better place will not change", says Enyart.

"I see the entry of the girls into boy scouts as a positive move in the right direction", Newman says. I applaud the activism of the young women who have been pushing for the policy change. BSA is now working to develop a scouting program for girls to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.

Steven Smith, CEO of the Connecticut River Council - the local branch of the Boy Scouts of America, with more than 20,000 scouts in eastern, central, and western Connecticut - emphasized that the integration is meant to complement Girl Scouts. Jones feels the decision will allow girls to move through rankings they've never had and gain new experiences.

Starting January 2018, girls will be admitted into the Cub Scouts and in 2019 a program for older girls will allow them to earn the rank of Eagle Scout.

While he no longer works for the Boy Scouts, it is hard for him to escape the legacy of the organization he still holds dear.

"She has a lot of work in front of her provided she is given the time to complete everything and that they count what she has already done, but she has it all documented", Mr. Ireland said.

At the national level, Girl Scout leaders were disappointed by the Boy Scouts' decision, Strawser said.

Faced with a decline in numbers and under increasing pressure from organizations like NOW to modify their rules, the Boy Scouts caved once again.

"Then about two months ago, our council office was notified by another parent that they thought there was something wrong with the pack's finances", said Dennis Dugan, the assistant scout executive for the Twin Rivers Council, the Boy Scout district for northeastern NY.

Oklahoma City resident Alex Sherman achieved the rank of Eagle Scout when he was younger. "Girls Scouts does an excellent job getting girls ready for the real-life experiences".

Nelles also said she was embarrassed by the harsh tone of some GSUSA statements assailing the Boy Scouts, such as one written this week by Latino civic leader Charles Garcia, a new member of Girl Scouts' national board.

Troop leaders say ultimately it will be up to not only a local leader, but a committee of people and the local chartered church to have the last say on whether girls can join that specific troop, but Michelle Newman lets it be known where she stands.

Girl Scouting offers many outdoor adventures and activities for its girl members.

Among those displeased with the announcement was 99-year-old Boy Scout volunteer Russ Gremel. Hannan's letter went on to point out that the Girl Scouts were well practiced in training women leaders and mentioned research that pointed to the benefits of a single-gender environment.

Wilcox said Girl Scouts is positioned for continued growth. "Instead of addressing systemic issues of continuing sexual assault, financial mismanagement and deficient programming, BSA's senior management wants to add an accelerant to the house fire by recruiting girls". "They still need the same traits", Conrad said.

John Douglas, a computer engineer and U.S. Navy Reservist in Irondale, Ala., admitted that he doesn't know much about the Girl Scouts, but he thinks the good outweighs the bad when it comes to opening Boy Scouts to girls. "We really have no idea" how many girls will join, he said.
