In the tiny community of Mission Beach, Queensland, parachuting is a popular activity for tourists looking for an exciting way to enjoy the attractive scenery.

It's not known at this point what led to the accident, but the police were alerted when the body of a skydiver was found in the back garden of a home near Mission Beach.

'The other two deceased were jumping as a tandem pair; a highly experienced instructor and a customer'.

The skydive was a 50th birthday present from her family.

An eyewitness told The Cairns Post newspaper he could do nothing as he watched the incident unfold on Friday afternoon.

Police believe that the collision caused their chutes to become entangled and not deploy properly. "You could see one chute was tangled and it wasn't opening", he recalled.

'It wasn't good to watch.

"Every person in Mission Beach we have spoken to about #skydive tragedy is absolutely heartbroken Big industry, well supported by locals", reporter Daniel Bateman reported on Twitter. "I had my heart in my mouth", he said.

"Skydiving operations have been suspended at Mission Beach while the appropriate authorities conduct an extensive investigation".

Our thoughts are with the families of the two men, thought to be in their thirties, and the one woman, in her fifties, who died in the accident.

Police investigators and other agencies remain at the scene.
