"I felt good in the first match", the 36-year-old said.

Juan Martin del Potro headed to a hospital for a scan on his left wrist after a nasty fall while winning his quarter-final at the Shanghai Masters.

"It's true that at the end of the second, that tie-break, I made a couple of mistakes with the forehand. I would like to play and be 100 per cent".

RAFAEL Nadal has continued to scythe his way through the Shanghai Masters, reaching the quarter-finals with a 6-3 6-1 thrashing of temperamental Italian Fabio Fognini.

Federer, the second seed, has not dropped a set all week.

Timeless rival Federer was even faster, dismissing Ukrainian qualifier Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-4, 6-2 in 61 minutes. Consolidating the break of serve, the world number nine had the golden opportunity to extend his lead when he earned a break point in the third game with Harrison unable to gain any rhythm on his serve.

In the third set, Nadal saved the one break point he faced in the match in the fifth game, and broke serve in the sixth to set up victory.

Breaking serve for the second straight time, Harrison looked well on course for the huge upset in the attractive city of Shanghai. "But I think he's still very young and he needs to keep learning, as he's doing now", said the Argentine, 23 in the world.

Fourth seed Cilic has reached the last four without dropping a set and overcame Nadal's countryman Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-3 6-4, although the Spaniard did managed to break Cilic's serve for the first time in the competition at 3-3 in the second set.

Del Potro received lengthy treatment to the area - which has undergone surgery in the past - before battling through 4-6 6-1 6-4.
