In addition to the seven children also died the teacher and the guard.

The children were all in the classroom when 50-year-old Damião Soares dos Santos entered the premises, walked into a classroom full of four-year olds, threw the inflammable liquid on them and himself and lit a match.

According to the reports, there were about 80 children present in the school when the attack occurred.

A security guard in a nursery in Brazil set himself on fire Thursday, killing five toddlers and injuring 15 others.

Authorities have identified the security guard as 50-year-old Damiao Soares dos Santos.

He is also alleged to have locked a teacher in a room before setting fire to the professional. The day care center was in Janauba, in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais. Santos died from his injuries at the hospital.

Minas Gerais Governor Fernando Pimentel visited the victims and relatives of those affected by the tragedy and reiterated the government's commitment "to help in what is possible".

Brazil's President Michel Temer expressed his condolences via Twitter. State police said officers were visiting the suspect's family members to try and determine the motive behind the attack.

"He has been an employee since 2008 and has never had a bad record so we could never have anticipated something of this nature happening", Mayor of Janauba, Carlos Isaildon Mendes, told the media.

Mr Temer said that, as the father of a school-age child, he understood this must be an extremely painful loss for the parents.
