Dreaded terrorist Abdul Qayoom Najar gunned down in J&K's Baramulla

A year ago in 2016, 372 causalities were reported in Valley while the figure in 2015 was 197. Najar was a resident of Sopore who carried Rs 10 lakh bounty on his head. The officer said Najar of Mumkak in Sopore was killed in a gunfight near the Zorawar Post at Lachipora, near Uri, in Baramulla district.

In several parts of Baramulla, a partial shutdown was observed on Wednesday to mourn the killing of Abdul Qayoom Najar.

He was arrested in 1992 and later released. Before his second stint, Najar reportedly destroyed all traces of his existence. Before entering into the second phase of the shameful terrorist job, he destroyed all his pictures and records, including the ones in his school. He also removed his pictures from family albums.

For past 22 years, security agencies have been hunting him with no photograph of concrete details.

In one instance, he sent one of his associates, Jammu and Kashmir police told Firstpost, into a Vodafone store in Srinagar asking its employees to vacate the store immediately. Within seconds, an explosion took place.

He said though he had developed differences with HM but he was actually a man of the outfit.

Police said that relations between Najar and Salahuddin had soured since 2014, after he demanded more money for militant operations in the Valley.

"His return was also necessitated because of the Hizb being wiped out from north Kashmir", the police added. Najar came to the limelight after the attacks on mobile towers and killings of six civilians in Sopore and its adjacent villages.

"He was returning to take command of the Hizb".

The outfit that claimed the attacks, Lashkar-e-Islam, (police describes it as a splinter group of Hizbul Mujahideen) which hardly had any presence in the Valley.

"The troops fired on the militants, who retaliated".

For years Najar was one of the most wanted militants of north Kashmir. However, they had no picture of him. According to an intelligence officer, Qayoom changed his appearance by using wigs and impersonation to deceive the security agencies.
