The defeat leaves Madrid seven points behind Barcelona at the top of the Liga Santander.

Also Saturday, Real Madrid visits Alaves while Athletic Bilbao is at Malaga. His powerful header from a cross by Munir El Haddadi was the Basque Country club's first goal of the season.

Antoine Griezmann and Yannick Carrasco both scored in the second half to give Atletico Madrid a 2-0 victory over Sevilla, leapfrogging the visitors into second place in the Spanish league on Saturday.

The away side's next opportunity did not arrive until the 23rd minute, but Ramos could only head Cristiano Ronaldo's chipped free kick into the arms of waiting Alaves goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco.

But Madrid responded three minutes later as Ronaldo broke down the right wing, took a shot which Alaves goalkeeper Pacheco fumbled, leaving Ceballos to fire a curling effort towards goal which flies into the bottom corner for his second of the night. Marco Asensio played in Ceballos, who cleverly cut the ball back before finishing the chance for the lead.

The winless Basques had plenty of late chances at an equaliser after Manu Garcia pulled them level in the 40th minute, but Los Blancos clung to their advantage.

But Madrid were far from comfortable as Alfonso Pedraza saw two attempts come off the woodwork himself for Alaves.

Ronaldo's afternoon ended with Pacheco tipping his angled strike around the post, but Madrid nonetheless held on for the three points.

Pacheco made two super saves to deny Vazquez and Ronaldo in the final 10 minutes, but 2-1 was how it finished as Real Madrid returned to winning ways against an Alaves side that have now lost all six of their league matches this season.
