The longtime character actor passed away from natural causes at at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Star Wars actor Mark Hamill and Twin Peaks creator David Lynch are among the stars who have paid tribute to actor Harry Dean Stanton, who has died aged 91.

With a 60-year-long resume, Stanton appeared in more than 200 movies and TV shows, creating memorable roles in films like Repo Man, Godfather II, Pretty in Pink and Escape from NY.

Harry Dean Stanton also played small parts in movies like Cool Hand Luke and In the Heat of the Night, the former giving him a chance to show his singing chops with the gospel song "Just a Closer Walk with Thee", the latter role being an uncredited one as a police officer.

The starring role parallels Stanton's own life, according to Kelly.

"Our hearts go out to all who knew him, all who loved him, and his fans the world over".

Director Edgar Wright wrote, "RIP to the legendary Harry Dean Stanton".

Stanton appeared in many films and television shows over a career that lasted half a century.

"It doesn't matter", Stanton said, who often greeted interviewers' questions with short answers.

Born July 14, 1926 in Kentucky, he was the oldest of three children of a mother a hairdresser and father, a baptist, a farmer of tobacco, which did not agree: "My mother wanted to leave the family nest".

Stanton landed his first leading role for Paris, Texas during an unassuming conversation with Sam Shepard at a bar in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He starred in both Repo Man and Red Dawn ("Avenge me!") that very same year. His final performance was in "Lucky", which will air later this month. Those eager to delve into more of Stanton's work, however, will be able to catch him in Lucky, which will hit theaters on September 29.

He said he could have been a director himself but "it was too much work".

"She cleared out me for Tom Cruise", Stanton said regularly. Deborah Harry, whom he also dated, recorded a 1989 song for him, "I Want That Man".

Every once in a while he was cast as a normal guy - he played Molly Ringwald's father in Pretty in Pink - but that was about it. Stanton was in six David Lynch movies and played the polygamist cult leader Roman Grant on HBO's Big Love. Ruminating about death in a 2013 interview in The New Yorker, he said, "When you're deep asleep and not dreaming, where the fuck are you?"
