In the 97 years of the Miss America pageant, contestants originating from North Dakota have never placed within the top five of the competition or won a crown. Mund, who is is set to attend Notre Dame Law School, is a Brown University alumna and the first Ivy League graduate to be crowned Miss America. Maria Menounos asked her about climate change and North Dakota believed that our government's position on the issue is incorrect.

While Mund may have been under the radar compared to other frontrunners, she was a finalist for a community service award in the preliminary competitions, taking place in Atlantic City in the days leading up to the pageant.

During the Miss America pageant Mund was asked about Trump's decision to pull out of the Paris Climate Accord and she voiced her opinion and said it was wrong to remove the USA out of the negotiations. "And I think it's just a bad decision on behalf of the United States". "I do believe it's a bad decision", she said.

Miss Dakota Cara Mund was named Miss America 2018.

The new Miss America walked over to one of the boats that says "Atlantic City" for more photos, demonstrating the pageant wave as a young, hoodie-wearing lifeguard slumped in his chair looked unimpressed.

The first runner-up was Miss Missouri, Jennifer Davis, who competed on a platform of diversity.

"So we need to always remember our history of being slave owning racists?" She even told judges that winning the crown was at the top of her bucket list during the first round of panel questions.

Earlier Sunday, as a deadly hurricane was slamming her home state, Miss Florida Sara Zeng sent a message of support to those in harm's way - and was then eliminated from the competition.

Miss Alaska, Angela Klapperich, 23, who hails from Wasilla, the same town where Sarah Palin was mayor (she was also Miss Wasilla), ventured onto the Boardwalk, sans makeup, to wish Mund well. For example: Miss South Carolina "knows everything about aliens", Miss Texas "taught her sorority how to give proper hugs", and Miss New Jersey can eat fire - a talent she inexplicably decided not to showcase.

Fox News headlined its story: "When did the Miss America pageant turn into a Nasty Woman protest?"
