Ousting a seven-time Grand Slam champion who was seeking her first US Open final since 2002 left Stephens stunned.

And as Stephens posed for photos mid-court with the trophy above her head, the lid fell off, leading to more smiles. In the victory, Stephens won 56 percent of her first serve points and 55 percent of her second serve points.

The 24-year-old showed her class in a win over Venus Williams to reach Saturday's showpiece in NY, but upped her game even further in the final to leave Keys with no answer on Arthur Ashe. After missing almost a year due to an injury she was ranked at No. 934 in the world as recently as August 7.

Prior to this year, Serena Williams had been the only American woman to make it to the tournament's finals in the last decade.

"Venus looked a little bit nervous, she looked a little bit nervous in the Wimbledon final too, which is understandable at 37 years old because you're not going to have many more chances", said the Swede.

When Keys hit a forehand into the net to end it, Stephens put her hand over her mouth as if in disbelief, closed her eyes for an instant, and then joined the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium in celebrating.

Keys brushed aside compatriot Coco Vandeweghe 6-1, 6-2.

"Obviously when you get in positions like this and you get nervous and tight, for me personally, I focus on my feet", she said. When it was just about over, he said that while Madison has a lot for which to be proud, "Sloane (Stephens) is just playing rock-solid tennis".

She is now on a run of 14 wins in 16 matches and through to her first major final.

"I have no words to describe what I'm feeling, what it took to get here, just the journey I've been on", Stephens Said after entering the finals. I don't even know how I got here. En route the final, the 24 year-old had beaten Venus Williams in the semi finals. Stephens won the final eight games of the match.

Now Stephens is one match from proving she is the best player at this U.S. Open.
