Kylo Ren is 'so much fun' to write — Rian Johnson

Mangold's film gave two terrifically iconic characters proper sendoffs with their best movie to date; we'd love if that ends up happening with Luke Skywalker, too.

It was the second "Star Wars" project to lose a director this year. Just what is going on at Lucasfilm?

A list of directors who've come and gone through the Star Wars universe, all signed because they were reasonably young and hip, most with blockbusters under their belt, and all canned when their new-era vibe crashed into Lucasfilm's (let's be honest, well-established and reasonably successful) plans.

Among the many new locales Rian Johnson has introduced in The Last Jedi, the most eye-catching is undoubtedly the casino city of Canto Bight. Lord and Miller were brought on for their irreverant sensibilitiy. Trevorrow was chosen for the Star Wars gig shortly after the opening of Jurassic World. The indie filmmaker not only directed The Last Jedi, but wrote the script as well.

The answer is likely a bit of both.

"Will Lucasfilm go for the tried and tested?"

Hopefully Kennedy - and the rest of Lucasfilm - can manage to get along better with whoever they choose to take responsibility for Episode IX. If the film is as dark and different as the early buzz suggests it is, he should be the no-brainer choice.

Maybe Lucasfilm has just been unlucky, or maybe they are having issues during their interview process, but either way, you can't keep pumping out Star Wars movies without people to direct them.

Although not strictly a parting of the ways over creative differences, Fantastic Four director Josh Trank dropped out of developing a Star Wars spin-off in 2015, citing the enormous pressures of being involved with the franchise. And while we have to wait until February for his Black Panther, the gorgeous trailers alone prove he knows how to handle incredible costumes and set pieces-a huge aspect of any Star Wars film. What I want to do is direct the last sequel.

Unlike the Lord and Miller situation over at The Somehow Still Untitled Han Solo Joint Now With Bonus Paul Bettany, fans did not seem to be too upset at the turnover for the final movie in the current trilogy. "Apart from the prequels, all the touchstones that make something feel like Star Wars have to do with griminess and dirt". Not in a million years. If Disney is interested in tapping into Lucas' original vision without the hassle or risk, by transitive property, Spielberg might be it. Nolan, however, looks as if he's out of the franchise reviving business.
