Cabrera was upset about a pitch that was thrown at him, and when Romine took off his catcher's mask, things, well, escalated quickly. Major League Baseball figures to be busy now, sorting out likely suspensions that could especially hurt the playoff-contending Yankees.

Also suspended were Tigers pitcher Alex Wilson (four games), Tigers manager Brad Ausmus (one game) and Yankees catchers Gary Sanchez (four games) and Austin Romine (two games). All four players said they were appealing and remain eligible until the process is complete.

"It wasn't necessarily of him intentionally beaning the batter, but to keep control of the situation, I deemed it necessary that he went", he said.

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi received a fine for his actions during Thursday's game. Cabrera is in the starting lineup as the Tigers open a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox on Friday night at Guaranteed Rate Field. Cabrera then got into a verbal spat with Romine before their words eventually turned into punches, inciting the first benches-clearing fracas. Cabrera claimed Judge tried to punch him while he was on the ground. "But if he wants to punch me, let it be face-to-face". But be fair. See the video, see the people who throw punches, see the people who were after me when I was on the floor.

Though Kahnle missed, his attempt was standard retaliation stuff, throwing at Cabrera at hip level as a response to Michael Fulmer plunking Sanchez. Sanchez said that Martinez was entitled to his own opinion. "I have a really good relationship with Romine". Sanchez later appeared to take a swing at someone at the bottom of the pile.

The Detroit Tigers have scheduled Jordan Zimmermann for Wednesday's start against the visiting New York Yankees.

All five players suspended were given fines that were not disclosed.

Aroldis Chapman had just finished his warmup pitches, summoned from the bullpen after Tommy Kahnle had been ejected for throwing the first pitch of the at-bat behind Cabrera's back. "C'mon, why didn't you say you threw?"

Wilson hit Frazier in the eighth inning, and Brett Gardner had to be restrained while trying to get at Tigers infielder Jose Iglesias during the third meeting of the teams on the field.
