Based on the latest 5 Series and billed as the quickest, most technologically advanced M-car ever, the all-new 2018 BMW M5 also is the first to feature the performance-focused M xDrive system that lets the vehicle operate in either a rear- or all-wheel drive configuration. "Take a look at the new BMW M5: its power output, torque and acceleration, the M specific all-wheel drive system M xDrive and its stunning design make our all-new toy the ideal feature for Need for Speed", said Frank van Meel, President BMW M Division.

It's already common knowledge that the new M5 will offer carbon-ceramic brakes, all-wheel drive and the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 fettled for 455kW/750Nm, coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission, rather than the dual-clutch gearbox of the current auto. Except in 2WD mode. That means owners can switch to a pure rear-wheel-drive mode.

Maximum power remains 441kW, the same as the outgoing M5 Competition, however torque increases 70Nm to750Nm and the added traction of all-wheel drive slashes the 0-100km/h claim to just 3.4sec, conveniently identical to its AMG nemesis.

All hail the 2018 BMW M5, the sixth-generation of the iconic super-sedan, and the German automaker's most cunning yet.

Like its predecessors, the new BMW M5 gets its own distinctive visuals that blend form and function. Plus, drivers can turn the system off, reverting the M5 back to rear-wheel drive, although this mode is intended for track use only. There will be however an optional M Driver's Package that raises top speed to 189 miles per hour. The two M1 and M2 buttons on the M leather steering wheel can be used to store two set-ups combining the driver's preference of engine, transmission, suspension and M xDrive modes, the DSC mode and Head-Up-Display settings. Also new is the rear diffuser. The old M5 weighed 4300 lbs on our scales, while BMW says the new one weighs 4255 lbs. With blue-painted six-piston fixed callipers at the front and single-piston floating callipers at the rear, plus perforated, inner-vented brake discs all round, the M compound brakes have the speed-shedding power to befit the car's dynamic potency.

"The BMW M5 has always embodied the ideal blend of mature business sedan and high-performance components", BMW M's vice president of design, Domagoj Dukec, said in a statement.

The styling of the new M5 will set it apart from the other 5 Series models with a more aggressive front bumper with large air intakes, an aluminum hood, more aerodynamic mirrors and a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof. Inside, the cars have M multifunction seats, Piano Black appliques, and a plaque on the center console indicating its production number.

Each M5 First Edition will have exclusive "Frozen Dark Red Metallic" paint, as well as high-gloss "Shadow Line" trim for the kidney grille, M gills and quad exhaust tips.
