Solheim Cup Tees Off to Raucous Atmosphere, Team USA Leads

Kerr has been a member of eight Solheim Cup teams, winning a total of 19 points as of this morning.

They settled down Friday afternoon, pulling away with a record-setting fourball performance.

The Solheim Cup is off to a roaring start.

Europe drew first blood in the afternoon.

Within minutes, though, the gap was back to three.

Brittany Lincicome and Brittany Lang combined for four birdies to defeat Caroline Masson and Florentyna Parker 3-2.

The U.S. would find a lot more success in fourball play - dominating so thoroughly that it never trailed in any of the four matches.

Karine Icher teamed with Catriona Matthew to beat their American counterparts by a hole. Her playing partner, Brittany Lang, joined in the shimmering show by holing her second shot on the seventh for an eagle two.

Hull appeared to be affected by a wrist problem in her morning foursomes, and she required treatment midway through the afternoon session although she bravely battled on and produced her second chip-in of the day to win the 15th with an eagle.

But there will be no complacency on the American side, said Lewis.

It was the bare minimum that they got. "And I want everybody to try to play at least three matches".

Creamer and Ernst also won in the morning, topping Reid and Emily Pedersen 5 and 3.

Lewis and Piller will play together for the third time as they face Anna Nordqvist and Georgia Hall, while Catriona Matthew and Karine Icher will aim to emulate their opening day win when they take on Michelle Wie and Danielle Kang in the anchor match.

That gave Europe a platform to build on in the afternoon.

Where there are points, there's hope.

"We're confident. So we just want to keep it going", American Austin Ernst said. Honestly, I never thought about that once ... that's just something to talk about. I'm so proud of my team. He and his wife, Martha, Mexican immigrants to the USA, sacrificed plenty so Lizette could pursue her golf dreams. It would have been so easy to throw in the towel but they didn't. "And I believe in them".

"We saw what happened in '15", Nordqvist said.

Taking her stance outside the bunker with the ball just in the sand, she kept both her balance and her nerve to splash out to a matter of inches.

Hull is, for now, expected to play in the singles but she is clearly not at her best. We're here to do our work, and that's kind of the model we took into Germany (two years ago).

"It wasn't the afternoon we had wished for, but the players fought very hard", European captain Annika Sorenstram said on the tournament website. But as you know, closing it out is the toughest thing to do and we need one more great day of golf.

Lizette Salas says she has waited six years to partner at the Solheim Cup with Danielle Kang, right, who hugs captain Juli Inkster after winning a match Friday.
