Matthews traded after three seasons with Eagles

According to Bleacher Report on Friday, the Bills' trade involves sending away wide receiver Sammy Watkins and a 2018 pick in the sixth round to the Los Angeles Rams.

While Buffalo no longer has a bonafide receiving threat on the outside, they've added a reliable pair of hands for quarterback Tyrod Taylor in the middle of the field by adding one of the NFL's best slot receivers. He's been the team's best player at the position in recent seasons so it seemed somewhat inconceivable that general manager Howie Roseman would want to deal the three-year pro.

Matthews, the Eagles' second-round pick in 2014, was among the most productive receivers in National Football League history in his first three seasons.

The Bills never bottomed out as badly as the Browns in recent years, but Buffalo's impressive stash of draft selections rivals that of Cleveland, which is in full-blown rebuilding mode.

Darby, a third-year player out of Florida State, was originally drafted by the Bills in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He has one year remaining on his rookie contract. "It goes to the player that we got, the position that we're acquiring and how hard it is to find those guys". A recent report suggested some team employees believe Matthews could have practiced more but allowed his contract status to influence his decision-making, a charge that the Matthews strongly denied. The Eagles are also high on rookie Mack Hollins and second-year player Marcus Johnson.

Just as importantly, the trade brings some much-needed talent to a suspect cornerback group.

A day after the Eagles' preseason opener in Green Bay they have made a big roster move. Darby will step in and compete for a first team role with Jalen Mills and Patrick Robinson.

Not coincidentally, Jim Schwartz was the defensive coordinator in Buffalo for Darby's rookie season. "Love you bro. I'll definitely miss doing this with you!"

Before we get into Darby and what he brings to the Eagles, let's talk about what the Eagles are losing in Matthews.
