It will keep you cool and (hopefully) get you a little tipsy! But now, the tradition has altered completely since, in the present era, sisters tie a Raksha Sutra around their brother's wrists.

On the eve of Rakshabandhan, the festival celebrating the relation between brothers and sisters, the President and Vice President of India greeted the nation.

President Ram Nath Kovind said the festival of Raksha Bandhan boosts the spirit of fraternity within the nation. Expensive or affordable, the gift is cherished by all sisters. On this day, a sister ties "Rakhi" around her brother's wrist while the brother undertakes an oath to protect his sister until death.

Rakhi is celebrated on August 7, 2017. Vaishali Kulkarni More, the first solo woman biker of Andhra Pradesh, said, "To my surprise, I received two rakhis this year, one from a cancer survivor who lives in a village and another from a school girl who lives in an orphanage in Ongole".

Jab Harry Met Sejal, the Imtiaz Ali directorial, was poor at the single screens across the country and the multiplexes in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Punjab, Bangalore, Mysore have acted as a saviour in this case.

However, Hindu and Jain communities in other countries also celebrate the special day - as do some people who aren't religious at all.

Every member of the family rises early for the rituals that begin in the morning.
