"The U.S. Marshals in Oakland have been working throughout the week with the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force and the Chicago Police Department", said the U.S. Marshals Service in a statement.

There were no guns drawn, but Lathem was ordered to carefully step out of the vehicle and he was taken into custody in a public courtyard area between the federal complex's two buildings, Conroy said. Lathem is scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning.

"We were not in contact with them directly", during the negotiations, he said.

"He knew that", Conroy said of Lathem. Police have not said why the suspects were in California and have not released details on what led up to the murder.

"He (Lathem) probably realized it's never going to end until he's in custody, so let me do it on my on terms".

Lathem has worked at Northwestern University since 2007 where he researches a type of bacteria that causes the bubonic plague.

On a university web page that has since been deleted, Mr Warren was listed as a senior treasury assistant at Oxford's Somerville College.

The men will appear in court in Oakland before being returned to Chicago where they will be interrogated by detectives, a police spokesman said. It was not immediately clear when that would happen.

Speaking before the suspects handed themselves in, Cornell-Duranleau's mother, Charlotte Cornell, told reporters that the suspects are not known to the family.

Both Warren, 56 and Lathem, 42, are suspected of murdering Trenton Cornell-Duranleau on July 27 by stabbing him to death in Lathem's 10th-floor flat in Chicago.

Authorities said that Prof Lathem had sent a video message to friends and family members apologising for the crime. The video raised concern among investigators that Lathem might kill himself. "Both men were seen on surveillance video at the building, police said".

Authorities haven't disclosed a possible motive for the killing.

In a statement, Chicago police said: "Both individuals will be held accountable for their actions and we hope today's arrest brings some comfort for the victim's family". They are not sure how Cornell-Duranleau or Lathem knew Warren, or if Warren knew them before he arrived in the United States.

Police said that on the day of the slaying, but before the body had been discovered, Lathem and Warren drove about 80 miles northwest to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. The victim was found last week stabbed to death in a River North high-rise apartment building.

There, officers found a man with several lacerations to his body, police said. He had been dead for 12-15 hours.
