Marouane Fellaini, Romelu Lukaku and Scott McTominay scored the goals as Manchester United recorded a 3-0 win over Norwegian outfit Valerenga Fotball in their penultimate pre-season friendly in Oslo on Sunday night.

Then a minute before half-time, Fellaini rose high in the box to meet a Mkhitaryan corner and via a deflection, his header went into the back of the net to give Mourinho much-needed relief going in at the half-time whistle.

There is still work to do in the coming weeks, but United will believe they can challenge for the Premier League title this term. Summer signings Victor Lindelof and Lukaku, meanwhile, were also introduced for the Red Devils.

The future of Marouane Fellaini has been in some doubt recently after being linked with a move to Galatasaray, but the Belgian showed no signs of it bothering him as he opened the scoring in first half.

"We know it will be hard next season".

For all their domination of the game, United somewhat laboured in attack at times in the first half against a packed Valerenga defence, with Marcus Rashford struggling to have an impact on proceedings.

And Fellaini was one of United's better performers, showing his strength on several occasions to win possession and also distributing well from the start.

According to Turkish newspaper Fanatik, Galatasaray "continue to work on the transfer" for Fellaini, with the club's technical director Igor Tudor said to be the man working on the deal. We want to try to avoid a Mourinho season. "Forget it. He's very important for me".

For all his critics, Fellaini was a key player at crucial times for United last season, and Mourinho's words suggest he could be again in 2017/18.

"We managers are many times happy with strikers, even when they don't score, because of the way they participate in team organisation and game plans".
