Manchester United rounded up pre-season tour of the U.S. with a 1-0 loss against Spanish giants, Barcelona, which manager Jose Mourinho said was good for his team, as they would use the experience to learn how to play against the big boys of Europe. "He showed that he belongs at that level".

Jose Mourinho made five changes in his Manchester United side, and the second half moved at a slower, less fluent pace.

"Possible, it's open", Mourinho said when asked if there was a chance Ibrahimovic could sign a new deal.

"This is what they want, they want [Lionel] Messi, Neymar, [Paul] Pogba, they want the best players to show what they are".

By the time Neymar netted the only goal on 32 minutes after pouncing on an Antonio Valencia slip, Barca could have already been out of sight were it not for their world-class custodian.

In another clash, Danilo made his debut while Kevin De Bruyne led from the front as Manchester City registered a resounding 4-1 win over Real Madrid in California.

With the addition of Zlatan Ibrahimovic last season, Rooney made just 25 appearances in all competitions scoring 5 goals as Mourinho preferred to play the former as the main striker, which led the England worldwide to end his illustriuos career at Manchester United.

"If you want to go, we had to make it easy for him to go".

"We won three trophies last season, so I hope that we are going to continue that way and improve".

"I think only Pique was on the bench [for Barcelona], I think only Ronaldo and [Sergio] Ramos didn't play [for Madrid] so it's very good for us to measure ourselves against them".

Ernesto Valverde's decision to rotate his entire XI at half-time coincided with De Gea's withdrawal, and Mourinho will have given his No.1 a huge pat on the back for his curtailed evening's work.

United's final friendly is against Sampdoria on August 2, before they play Real Madrid again in the UEFA Super Cup on August 8. "So now we just need to land safely in Manchester and this part of the pre-season was ideal".
